unmissable US experience |
The British geographer Halford Mackinder coined the term in 1904 to refer to the heart of the Eurasian landmass: a strategic center of industry, natural resources, and power. The use of the term "heartland" to apply to the American Midwest did not become common until later in the 20th century.
The Heartland serves as the 'Breadbasket' of the Nation, accounting for more than 60% of U.S. agricultural production, home to the nation's largest aquifer, the Ogallala, as well as three major river systems, the Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio.
